Default Why do 2D fighters still exist? They should be extinct.

I still don't understand why 2D fighters still exist ... the ones I've tried were quite unsatisfying. I'm used to Virtua Fighter, Tekken and Dead or Alive series of games. The 2D fighters make me feel like I'm fighting in a space the size of a ....a..... TV screen. The scripted animations are primitive and the effects are cheezy. Mortal Kombat is hardly immersive ... the characters don't even seem to be in fighting stances - they stand upright and "walk" up to each other and start slugging away as if they were a couple G.I. Joe action figures some kid were holding in each hand ...

maybe I haven't given the 2Ds a fair try. I really want to understand what the big deal is about. Which ones should I be trying? Someone please tell me the definitive 2D fighter that will change my tune.

hush, hush. back in the day 2d fighters where the BOMB, obv if uv spent all ur time playing 3d fighters, 2d wont seem as good.

was never a fan of 2D fighters myself, more side scrolling action games. but thats the reason anyway.

Oh, thought you meant like mario. I dunno, fighters aren't my taste, though SSB was kinda fun. I'm not a good enough at losing. I certainly can't "sit down and think over what I did wrong" like the pros...

Because 2-D is when really the fighting Genre busted out. Just like "Ultima Online" was the grand-daddy of MMORPGS. Hence, 2-D fighters are beloved among the people for starting a genre they could really get into. I'm a Street Fighter Type of man myself, I love it...I was raised on them. Like stated, if you grew up on 3d fighters, you won't understand the infatuation, because you've always had your graphics, but back in the day with 2-D's, all we had was gameplay, really. It was a blast.

You should try them. They are quite enjoyable series, or any 2-d boxing game.

I realize they were the forerunner of 3D fighters ... but, for some odd reason, they're still being made for some of the consoles. e.g. Samurai Showdown , King of Fighters and Guilty Gear series, for example.

hmm - I might give it another try ... maybe a rental

Because people will love them til the end of time, and will continue to buy them, they know they forever have a market there. It's a cycle.

Because they're BETTER. I'll take Guilty Gear or the SF Anniversary Collection over any of this 3D junk any day. The only decent 3D fighter IMO is the Soul Caliber series. I've played Tekken, DOA, etc... they're just not any fun. But we still bust out SF:AC with my family and friends and we still have a blast.

By the way... if you love fighting games, and you don't own SF:AC... do yourself a favor and GO GET IT!! Not only does it have EVERY version of Street Fighter II on it, from the original World Warrior to SSFII:T, but it comes with Street Fighter III: Third Strike. I don't think SFIII:TS ever made it past arcade release here in the States, and no one goes to arcades anymore. But this is a FABULOUS fighting game, perhaps even better than SFII. Go get it, right now.

Marvel vs. Capcom 1-2 and Marvel vs. street fighter were both a blast to play.

Aracos79, I might give Guilty Gear a looksee some time ... but you can't possibly reject all 3D fighters ... I mean Virtua Fighter is wonderful! Not just the graphics but the gameplay, too.

And what's wrong with DOA? What don't you like about the gameplay? ...you must admit, the eye-candy in DOA 4 is .... entertaining, no?

Ah but eye-candy alone does not a game make. And like I said, I don't reject ALL 3D fighters. I enjoy Soul Calibur a great deal... Weapon Master mode in SCII is a ton of fun, as is laying the smack down with Link.

well, I didn't say it was all about eye-candy ... but it's certainly a perk.

I feel so restricted in space when I play 2D fighters. Granted, I haven't played them all - and I haven't played them for a while - that's why I'm asking for suggestions and not just trashing the whole genre.

The 2D fighters in my memory are as I described above - choppy animation and limited movement e.g. move foreward, jump back over a ranged attack, jump foreward with an attack, move backwards .... mid-air weak punch, punch, punch, kick , medium punch blah blah ... I always feel cornered since I can't get as much distance as I'd like. Tekken is practically linear but it let me sidestep, at least.

I'm sure I'm missing most of the nuances since I've never been able to master any of them - or even figure out what's going with the choppy animation - maybe I'm just a hopeless 2D fighter-retard ...

That's ok... I'm a hopeless 3D fighter-retard. The whole "moving in three dimensions" thing just totally throws me off. I always end up playing it 2D-style and don't take advantage of things like circle strafing or sidestepping.

I have the opposite view.

I guess its just what you were brought up playing..

I HATE 3-D fighters..will never play them..Save me the Marvel vs Capcom or King of Fighters (the old ones) anyday..

I also HATE any game that just gets praise because of how expensive your graphics card has to be to play it. Half the time its just beautiful GARBAGE and games that came out 10 years ago can kill it fun wise.

I guess I just remember a time when the games were made for fun and not made like a movie (you arent supposed to sit down and WATCH a game..you play it..)

I can relate to that completely.
Way back when the graphics were limited the programmers had to be more creative. I'll never forget the games that tickled my imagination because of their interesting gameplay or their wacky premise. Other than the obvious (Pac Man, Space Invaders, Missile Command ...) here are some that I'll never forget:

Crazy Climber - this guy climbing an endless skyscraper where he has to dodge kids throwing flowerpots, birds divebombing poop and even the occasional King Kong!

Tempest - vector graphics classic. I don't know what inspired this abstract premise but I was a serious addict of this game.

Food Fight - I was never good at this but I thought it was funny. Running around hurling peas, pies, pizzas etc. A nice alternative to the trend in violence.

and many others ....

Were you meaning Wing Commander 3 on the PSOne? I heard that was UNPLAYABLE most of the time...

They will continue to exist for the exact same reason that there is now Dynasty Warriors 5, (more like 9 or 10) and that is because they know it will sell anyway.
